Introduction

SPI has an expert team working on laser applications in well-equipped Applications Laboratories in the UK and the USA; the team has extensive experience in laser applications, materials engineering, and manufacturing processes. Located in Santa Clara, California and Southampton, UK, the labs are equipped with a full range of SPI’s state-of-the-art pulsed and CW fiber laser sources which can be fitted to a number of workstations with linear and rotary motion stages and/or galvanometer scanners, thus allowing a wide range of processes to be developed including cutting, marking, engraving, welding, micromachining, thin-film ablation and many others. The labs also feature first class metrology facilities; we also work with external houses to augment our capabilities in materials diagnostics, advanced metrology, and materials research when appropriate.

Establishing applications ‘know how’

A key part of the applications remit is to establish the know-how to support customers with in-depth knowledge of laser materials processing for the fast and successful implementation of manufacturing processes utilizing SPI’s pulsed and CW fiber lasers in marking and engraving, galvo (scanner) based welding, flying-head 2-D welding, cutting and scribing, rotary Welding and thin-film processing.

Our extensive process database and application notes provide guidance for potential users; where customer application-specific information is required, our applications team will work with you to meet your requirements, create a solution and provide case-specific feedback to inform your decision.

How can you work with our applications lab teams?

Working closely with in-house product-line specialists and with our customers, the services of the SPI Applications Laboratories are available to carry out early stage development through application feasibility proving and optimization to ensure a perfect fit with customer requirements.  The services of the SPI Labs can be made available for free-of-charge proof of concept sample processing.

Contact your local sales representative to discuss your application and arrange for a ‘proof of concept’ trial or visit.

Working with technical institutions & Universities

R&D into novel laser applications is undertaken in conjunction with world-leading laser institutions and universities; SPI can facilitate links with industry on a wide range of laser research projects.  If detailed process development work is warranted, then SPI is pleased to introduce customers to the relevant SPI Lasers Academic Partners (universities and laser institutes) who have a range of SPI fiber lasers available and who are willing to undertake funded process development activity on behalf of industrial customers.

Providing Customer training classes

SPI has been developing a world class training program enabling us to pass on our knowledge and understanding of fiber lasers on to you, our customers. The training courses are split between our key product ranges and currently cover user training and applications training for both pulsed and CW fiber lasers.
